A
Very Short Guide to Britain
Having spent a great deal of time sending students on trips to see castles in Wales, monuments in London, colleges in Cambridge and various cathedrals around the country, I realised that students were taking lots of photos while understanding very little about the historical significance of the places they were visiting.
A very Short Guide to Britain is my attempt to bridge this knowledge gap, and help students get more from their trips to Britain’s most popular tourist destinations by providing simple background information and linking it all chronologically. In addition to the text on each page there is a timeline running along the bottom which gives information on kings and queens, and lists important historical events and buildings of the period. The book is intended for students to read independently, depending on their own level of interest, but there are also 7 sheets of comprehension questions freely available for teachers to download, which enable the book to be used as the basis for a reading exercise in class. A very Short Guide to Britain is a 60-page A5-size book that would make an excellent addition to the welcome pack which most organisations give their students on arrival, and is very reasonably priced at £1.50 plus postage and packing (minimum order 500 copies).
